Busy week working in Durham Cathedral and the Miners Gala

A busy couple of weeks in the Cathedral and in Durham in general.  There have been Durham University Graduations taking place in the Cathedral.  Therefore, the Cathedral has been closed during the day on some days, but has been open on an evening instead.

Yesterday, Friday 7th , the Cathedral was open as usual and it was a very busy day with tour groups and school groups.  The Tower climb tickets were very popular and sold out.  There is a tradition/myth that Durham University students shouldn’t climb the tower until after they have graduated otherwise it is bad luck…

Today, Saturday 8th July, is the Durham Miners Gala.  Durham City is packed out.  There is a service in the Cathedral today to bless the banners.  The brass bands are very good and very atmospheric.   On the way walking up to work, I had to dodge in and out of the marchers and banners and bands and on the way home, I sauntered back down and watched them.

The Cathedral is an interesting place to work, not just because of the awesomely beautiful building but because of the events that take place, the day to day happenings and the people that visit. It does feel very much part of the community in a historical/continuity way, more so than other cities I think.

Next week, the Gaia installation will begin. There are lots of events associated with it and it is definitely worth seeing. Gaia
